How Hackney Council is going green
Hackney: one of the greenest boroughs in London!
Hackney is one of the greenest borough in London, with some of the lowest carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions anywhere in the capital, according to Government figures.
We are committed to getting greener, with a number of measures and policies in place that reflect this commitment::
- We support sustainable transport, and offer free parking to electric and other green vehicles.
- We run a successful car club scheme.
- We have been voted best London borough for cycling.
- We are are now a Fairtrade Council.
- We are increasing recycling rates: 25% of rubbish produced in Hackney is now being recycled.
- We support the 10:10 initiative which aims to reduce carbon by 10% during 2010.
- We are building a new, lower carbon, combined heat and power plant to provide cleaner heating to residents on Cranston Estate
- We operate 20 fully electric and hybrid vehicles and an increasing number of vehicles on high blend biodiesel
- We support the Zero Waste Places scheme which aims to help residents to drastically reduce their waste.
- We are using social media (Facebook) to spread the word about green issues and engage our residents with them. Join us on Facebook now!
Being green is not just about transport and recycling - Hackney has more green spaces than any other inner London borough, and we encourage all residents to get out and make the most of them.
In addition to these initiatives, Hackney Council has signed the Nottingham declaration - a nationwide pledge to tackle climate change and reduce emissions - and we currently support a 'local Agenda 21' (an agenda for sustainable development).
A key concern for the Mayor
Green issues are a key concern for the Mayor, Jules Pipe. He says:
"Although climate change is a global reality, action needs to start locally and I am pleased that by increasing the levels of rubbish we recycle, investing in green infrastructure and moderninsing our fleet of vehicles we are making Hackney a greener place."
