Avoid junk mail
Hackney households receive approximately 35 million pieces of unwanted mail each year. These weigh 900 tonnes and take 6,000 trees to create.
There are several ways to reduce the amount of unwanted mail you receive:
Get a 'Say no to junk mail' pack
Hackney Council has a pack available to help you reduce the unwanted mail you receive. It contains:
- a 'no junk mail' sticker which you can put on your letterbox and stop flyers, leaflets and fast food menus hitting your doormat (this will not affect your delivery of Hackney Today).
- a Royal mail 'opt out' card - fill this in and return it to stop unaddressed mail. Alternatively, you can phone 01865 796 988 or email optout@royalmail.com.
- information about how you can register with the Mail Preference Service (MPS) to have your name and address removed from up to 95% of mailing lists.
Download your pack now (ZIP file, 225KB) or order one from the recycling team by calling 020 8356 6688 or emailing your name and address to recycling@hackney.gov.uk.
Stop post going to your old address
The Royal Mail's "I am Moving" service PDF(1MB) allows those moving home to notify all of their suppliers (gas, electricity, water, TV, charities, subscriptions etc.) of their new address. It will save you time and money, and helps stop mail going to the wrong address.
Go paperless
Choose to receive your statements online - many utilities have made it simple to do this online. There are several advantages of online statements:
- They add to your identity security as you do not have to dispose of them.
- They save space and decuttler your house.
- They reduce waste!
Visit your bank, gas or electricity supplier's website for more information.
Avoid new mailing lists
When completing forms, don't forget that you can usually tick a box requesting no further correspondence (you can also write to the company).
You can also tick the box on the council's annual electoral registration form to opt out of the edited version of the electoral register, which companies can buy for marketing purposes.
Stop BT phonebook deliveries
If you would like to opt out of future hard copy editions of the phone book from BT then submit your name, telephone number, address and postcode with the following text "I authorise my address to be removed from future deliveries of the Phone Book from BT" via email to directory.products@bt.com. BT will ensure that your address is removed from their database.
