Fair Rents Inspection

Many tenants living in houses in multiple occupation (HMOs) receive Housing Benefit to help them pay the rent.

When applications for Housing Benefit are first made, the amount initially awarded is based on indicative rent levels provided to Hackney's Revenues and Benefits Team by the Rent Service and will vary according to the type and location of the property.

The amount ultimatley paid in benefit is finalised after a visit by the Rent Officer to assess the precise rental value of the accommodation.

Rent levels in privately rented accommodation can be registered by The Rent Service at the landlord's request. Alternatively, tenants not in receipt of Housing Benefit can ask the Rent Service for a pre-tenancy determination of rent before they move in so that they know what rent it is reasonable to expect to pay.
