HMO Registration Schemes in Hackney
Hackney has declared two HMO Registration Schemes in Brownswood and Clissold, the two areas of the borough known to have a high number of HMOs.
The aim of the Registration Schemes is to ensure that all HMOs within the area are registered with the Council, which can then take steps to ensure that the accommodation meets minimum legal standards in the following respects:
- the repair of the property
- the provision of basic amenities (cooking facilities, washing and bathing facilities and toilets)
- fire safety
- overcrowding
The person in control of the HMO must be a fit and proper person. Accredited Landlords are deemed to be fit and proper persons. See Landlord Accreditation page.
The cost of registering an HMO is currently £60 per habitable room. Habitable rooms include bedrooms, sitting rooms and bed-sitting rooms. Registration lasts for 5 years and must be renewed after this time. The cost of re-registration is £30 per habitable room.
