Hackney Downs improvements
Hackney Downs hub
The construction of a new hub in the centre of Hackney Downs will commence construction in January 2010. The single storey building will replace the existing ranger station, which will be demolished in January 2010. The hub will contain facilities for the community's use including accessable public toilets, two team changing rooms, a community meeting room and a rangers office. The building will be clad in wood, have a living green roof and have a proportion of its energy needs met from renewable energy sources.
Improved sports provision
The basket ball area will be resurfaced and and one of the existing courts will be transformed into a Multi Use Games Area (MUGA), the existing flood lighting will also be repaired. Two of the existing tennis courts will also be resurfaced and refenced, these works will be completed by July 2010. Two additional tennis courts will be created in the park and sited next door to the existing courts, these will be developed in a second phase of works once funding has been secured.
Hackney Downs play area
The play area at Hackney Downs has been redesigned and funding has been secured from the Play Pathfinder scheme to revamp the play area. Construction of the play area will begin in January 2010 with the first phase being completed by the end of March 2010.
The second phase will see the demolition of the old toilet block in the childrens play area providing an increased area for play. Toilet provision will still be available on site in the new hub which is due for completion by July 2010. See draft play area design image at the top of the page.
