New: free swimming in Hackney for disabled people and their carers
To celebrate one year to go until the 2012 Paralympic Games, disabled people and their carers can swim for free at pools across the borough, all year round. There is also an opportunity for disabled people and their carers to learn to swim or gain more confidence in the water for free.
Local pools participating in all free swimming schemes are Kings Hall Leisure Centre, Britannia Leisure Centre, and Clissold Leisure Centre. Disabled people and their carers can also swim for free at London Fields Lido.
For more information or to book a session visit the GLL 'Swim Free in Hackney' page (GLL are the not-for-profit organisation that run Hackney leisure centres).
Swimming offers
As part of the BBC's Big Splash initiative, 2-for-1 swimming deals and other excellent offers are now available to swimmers at Hackney pools. Find out about the offers available at your local pool!
Free sports sessions
Young women in Hackney are able to take part in more sport for free thanks to Hackney Council being chosen to take part in Sport England's 'Active Women' scheme. The scheme aims to encourage more young women, especially those who care for children, to take up a sport as they are less likely than young men to participate in sports activities.
Through 'Active Women', the Council will provide opportunities for 16-25 year old women to take part in free swimming, netball, football, volleyball, dance and gym and fitness sessions at local leisure centres across the borough. A series of 12 week programmes, which will start in Spring 2011, will run for two years providing opportunities to try a range of sports.
Young women can now register their interest in the scheme by contacting Sarah Davies at Hackney Council on 020 8356 7563 or emailing sarah.davies@hackney.gov.uk.
