Hackney: the place - Sport
Hackney Marshes has the largest concentration of football pitches in the whole of Europe; over a hundred games are played there every winter weekend. There is also hockey, rugby, cricket and even kite flying – with the East London Kite festival taking place over Hackney Marshes every year.
It doesn’t stop at the Marshes though. There is the Britannia Leisure Centre and everything from thriving tennis clubs to taekwando classes. The West Reservoir Water Sports Centre, in a quiet corner of Stoke Newington, offers water sports enthusiasts the chance to sail, kayak and have the occasional dragon boat race. The Lea Valley Canal winds its way through the Marshes, with people utilising the tow paths for walking or exercising and the canal for rowing or pleasure boating.
