Hackney Wick Area Action Plan
Hackney Wick is an area that will undergo great changes in the coming years. The 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and private and public sector investment have resulted in a need for a strategy to guide and manage future change in the area.
Hackney Council, in partnership with the London Thames Gateway Development Corporation and Design for London, have prepared a draft Area Action Plan for Hackney Wick.
What is an Area Action Plan and why are we doing one?
An Area Action Plan (AAP) is a tool to manage development pressures or to help regeneration. The Council has identified Hackney Wick as an area which will undergo change in the coming years, both from the impacts of the Olympic developments, and from developments lead by the private sector. The Masterplan will clearly set out the future vision for the area and address the following core objectives;
- Achieving intensified industrial areas;
- Addressing existing barriers to movement;
- Harnessing the benefit of the area’s waterways;
- Creating linkages to, along, and across the Lea Navigation;
- Creating a strong and distinctive neighbourhood hub around the existing Hackney Wick Station;
- Improving accessibility by providing the necessary local and strategic link within the study area.

Next Steps
We will review all of the comments received on the draft APP and use them to help shape the document.
All of the comments received will be summaried and posted on this website and those who wanted to be kept informed will be notified by mail or email. The ideas and proposals within the draft AAP will then be reviewed to incorporate community and stakeholder comments where appropriate.
The Council hopes to adopt Phase 1 of the document in mid 2010. At that point, the Council will publish a consultation report which will summarise comments received, and how the Council has responded to those comments in developing the final document.
Previous Community Engagement on the Masterplan
An initial community drop-in session for the draft masterplan took place at H Forman & Son Salmon Factory on 7 May 2008, and the Hackney Wick Community Centre (Old Hackney Wick Baths) on 8 May 2008. Members of the public were invited to express what they considered to be the issues and opportunities for the area during these drop-in sessions.
The information boards that were displayed on the day is available for download. (see below) The informal consultation ended on 30 May 2008.
