Hackney has achieved an overall reduction in crime of 28% since 2005, being the first London borough to surpass its target of a 20% reduction in crime, achieving this by August 2006, 18 months ahead of schedule.

Commenting on the figures, Mayor Jules Pipe said:

“I’m delighted that Hackney’s continuing achievements are being recognised by the Government and I welcome the visit made by the Minister to Hackney.

“We are committed to continuing to reduce crime and make Hackney a safer place to live. These figures show the importance, and effectiveness, of joint police and council initiatives. We will continue to identify and tackle criminal activity to strive to make Hackney a safer place."

Cllr Alan Laing, the Carbinet Member for Neighbourhoods added: ”These figures are fantastic news. The reduction in crime reflects the work Hackney’s Safer Neighbourhood Teams are doing to tackle crime and the fear of crime. Hackney regularly works in partnership with the Metropolitan Police Service to help make the borough a safer place for the people who live and work here.”

Mr McNulty said: "The Government is committed to reducing crime and the damage it causes to our local communities, which is why I am delighted with the progress being made by Hackney, which is resulting in an impressive drop in crime.

"Hackney are well on course to exceed their crime reduction target and should be congratulated on their success. Through their strong Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership, Safer Neighbourhood Team and engagement with the local community, I hope to see this trend improved further and sustained."

During his visit, Minister McNulty met the local Safer Neighbourhood Team and Wardens to learn about their work, and heard from Hackney residents and Councillors about the progresses and challenges of crime reduction.
