In Town Without My Car

BMX bike displays, circus performers, music and murals are just some of the attractions of the ‘In Town Without My Car’ event. Sections of Grove Road, in Victoria Park, are set to be grassed over for a street party with bunting, stalls and a host of activities for all to enjoy.

Hackney and Tower Hamlets councils have teamed up to organise the event from 11am to 5pm on 22 September. The aim is to raise awareness of the health and environmental benefits of sustainable travel, and the fun that can be had along the way.

Children and adults alike will be encouraged to reclaim their street by imagining it without cars in a road painting. Other activities include face-painting, Fussball and spectacular roller-bike displays. Those who want to have a go themselves can try out recumbent bikes, with a laid-back riding position, and the Rollapaluza.

Council staff will be on hand with information about sustainable transport, including the Hackney Car Club, school run schemes, public transport, walking and cycling.

Cllr Alan Laing, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said:

"Sustainable transport is a priority for the Council and we have worked closely with Tower Hamlets to host this event. We know that local people are concerned about carbon emissions, congestion and parking on our roads. This will be a great opportunity for them to support our ongoing work to promote sustainable transport in the area and enjoy the activities planned.”

The 277 bus will be diverted via Mare Street and Old Ford Road for the day.
