Junior Road Safety Officer Scheme
The JRSO (Junior Road Safety Officer) Scheme is an exciting programme for keeping children safe on the roads in Hackney. The JRSO scheme involves two Year 5 or year 6 pupils per school that have been chosen to help promote road safety issues within the school and local community. In effect, they become the schools road safety champions.
Background to the scheme
Hackney's Road Safety Team has started the JRSO scheme in primary schools in response to road safety concerns and in keeping with the Department for Transport 2010 road safety targets. The JRSO is a flexible scheme that can be designed around the priorities of each school and is supported by Transport for London. The scheme supports School Travel Plans, PSHE and Citizenship and can also contribute towards Healthy Schools initiatives.
The role of a JRSO
The role of a JRSO is to talk at school assemblies about road safety topics, maintain a central notice board, run competitions in the school and disperse prizes for the winners. Road Safety Officers from LB Hackney support the school by meeting with the JRSOs and chosen Road Safety Champion (teacher/teacher aid) on a regular basis.
How to be a JRSO
Talk to your teacher or headteacher about being involved in the JRSO scheme. They can contact the Road Safety Officer: sandra.agbabiaka@hackney.gov.uk
