The Speaker
As Hackney Council has a directly elected Mayor with executive powers, the role of Speaker fulfils many of the ceremonial and public duties traditionally associated with the Mayor.
The Speaker of Hackney Council is a serving councillor elected to the office for one year by fellow council members at their Annual Meeting.
The job of the Speaker is to chair meetings of the full Council and, as the Borough's Civic Representative, to attend numerous events throughout the year and welcome visitors to the Borough. In addition, the Speaker presides over citizenship ceremonies at the Town Hall.
More information about the current Speaker, including Speaker’s charities and how to book the Speaker for an event, can be found in the pages to the left.
