What is the election for, and when is it taking place?

The election is for the Mayor of London and the London Assembly, and it is taking place on 1 May 2008.

Who can vote?

To vote you need to:

  • Live in London
  • Be at least 18 years old on 1 May
  • Be a British, Commonwealth or EU citizen
  • Be on the electoral register

Current EU countries are:

Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom.

Commonwealth countries are:

How do I know if I’m on the electoral register?

If you returned your voter registration form last autumn you are registered. If you didn’t or your details have changed there is still time to register or make the changes. The deadline is 16 April.

How can I vote?

There are three different ways to vote:

  • In person on the day at a polling station between 7am and 10pm
  • Via post (see below for more info)
  • By proxy (contact Electoral Services for more information)

Where do I vote?

If voting in person you will be told which polling station you should vote at when you receive your polling card.

How can I vote by post?

Voting by post is easy:

  • Send an application for a postal ballot paper to Electoral Services. The form is available to download here (PDF 29.4KB) If you need the form to be sent to you contact Electoral Services – call 20 8356 3232, or email info@hackney.gov.uk
  • Sign and send it to Electoral Services, Room 60, Hackney Town Hall, London, E8 1EA by 16 April 2008
  • You’ll then receive your ballot paper at home

You will be sent an application automatically.
