Famous faces

Hackney's Register Office has seen a few famous faces.

Comedian Bob Mills got married to his wife Jan, who is Turkish, in Hackney Register Office in 1984. 'One of the things I remember was that the registrar had made the effort to learn a bit of Turkish, so he was able to say 'have a lovely day' in Turkish, which I thought was a lovely touch. We had some photographs taken outside, so in our romantic wedding photographs there is a huge banner hanging down saying something like 200,000 unemployed in this borough!'

Actor and star of The Professionals Martin Shaw, and 70s disco queen Tina Charles were both married here (not to each other!). Eastenders actress Patsy Palmer (Bianca) and actor Paul Bradley (used to play Nigel) have both been wedding guests, as has pop star David Essex. TV personality Jeremy Beadle's birth was registered here.
