Mapping the Change

Between now and 2012 Hackney Museum and Hackney Archives will be recording the changes to local people’s lives brought about by the London Olympic and Paralympic Games.

This unique history project is about the people of Hackney and the impact of the Olympic and Paralympic Games on their lives. Mapping the Change will capture the many voices of Hackney’s hugely diverse communities by working with community groups, local artists and individuals to produce photographic, digital media, text, and audio based records of the changes and people’s responses to them.

These records will become an educational resource and special exhibition in 2012 as well as being a permanent record for generations to come – a picture of a crucial period in history for Hackney, as seen through the eyes of local people.

Events and exhibitions

Each year from 2008 to 2012 Hackney Museum will host a special exhibition in our Platform space, and a series of public events. These will provide an opportunity for local communities to share their experiences and to develop their projects with other local people.

In 2012 Hackney Museum and Archives will deliver a major exhibition involving all of the projects.

Get involved

There are three ways to get involved -

• Hackney Museum and Archives are planning to organise partnership projects working with community groups in particular areas, to enable them to learn new skills and record the changes in their area.
• Interested individuals can join Community Observers scheme and contribute their own personal records. There will be 6 monthly training and networking events for community observers and you can join at any time.
• Artists or groups running their own related projects can become part of the Mapping the Change family, and add their work to the permanent archive. Visit the Archives Events page to find about an event on 20 November.
