Jules Pipe - Mayor of Hackney
Biography
Jules Pipe was re-elected as Mayor of Hackney for a third term in May 2010, having become the borough’s first directly elected Mayor in October 2002.
As one of only eleven directly elected local authority Mayors in the country, Jules has overseen the transformation of Council finances and the delivery of Council services, resulting in a net increase of over 50 percentage points in resident satisfaction, and a three-star ‘improving strongly’ rating from the Audit Commission in February 2009.
Since Jules Pipe became Mayor, Hackney has seen one of the fastest falls in crime in London, the establishment of five new secondary schools and the successful campaign to put Hackney on the tube map. Council Tax has been frozen for the past five years, with no cuts to services, and is now below the London average. Jules is also at the forefront of Hackney’s ambitious plans and aspirations for the borough’s 2012 legacy.
Before becoming Mayor, Jules worked as a newspaper journalist, working for, among others, the Sunday Times and Sunday Telegraph, as well as serving as a ward councillor from 1996 to 2002, and Leader of the Council from June 2001 until elected as Mayor in 2002.
He was born and grew up in East London, and has lived in Hackney for 16 years.
In the 2008 New Year's Honours List, Jules was awarded a CBE in recognition of his service to local government.
