Hackney Mediation Service
Don’t get mad get mediation
Hackney Mediation Service was officially launched in September 1996 and has been working alongside the people of Hackney for over ten years to help resolve conflicts in the community.
Mediation is a communication process in which an impartial person (the mediator) helps neighbours to find their own solutions to their disputes. Our trained volunteer mediators are helping people to feel empowered to settle differences with neighbours in a non-violent way. Through mediation the Service helps the people of the Borough to make Hackney a better and safer place to live and grow up.
The disputes we help with are:
- Noise
- Walls, fences and hedges
- DIY
- Children’s behaviour
- Parking
- Pets
- Rubbish
- Shared spaces
- Differences in lifestyles
The mediation we offer is:
- Voluntary – no one is forced to try it
- Quick – visits and mediation can be arranged within weeks of you asking
- Private – only the people involved are given details of any agreement
- Flexible – visits can be during the day or in the evening, on week days or at weekends
The Service is:
- Available to anyone living in Hackney
- Free – we do not charge you for the service
- Confidential – we do not tell anyone else what you tell us
- Independent – we do not represent the Council or any other agency or authority
Our mediators are:
- Unpaid volunteers - passionate to help people explore solutions to their own problems
- Members of the community – they live or work in Hackney
- Trained – they complete an accredited course in community mediation skills and how to use them
- Unbiased – they do not take sides or make judgements
We also provide interpreters where English is a second language.
