Mode of travel survey

On the School Census there is a question on how pupils travel to school. From this academic year this data collected will also be used in your School Travel Plan (STP) Review. Therefore schools only need to complete one travel survey each year.

2011 Census data

  • We have received from The Learning Trust the 2011 Mode of Travel Census Data for all LEA schools (please note this cannot be changed for this year).
  • In the STP Review template we need you to tell us how the data was collected - please ask your Admin Officer if you are unsure.

Please note this is a transition year and if your school's data is not completely accurate for this year (e.g. if mode of travel data has only been updated for new starters and not the whole school), then the best thing to do is make note of this in your STP Review and then work with your Admin Officer to ensure the 2012 data (collected between September 2011 and January 2012) is correct.

Independent schools:

  • Please conduct a hands up survey this spring like usual and add this data to the template.

New mode of travel data collection process

  • STP Champions should work with the school Admin Officer to ensure the census info is accurate and use the same data for the STP Review
  • We recommend using classroom surveys. Just like hands up surveys, but with class register lists
  • The Learning Trust have created a report template on SIMS. School Admin Officers just need to print the report to produce class sheets and then update the information on SIMS via a bulk update
  • We get the information from the Learning Trust (or you can get it from the school office). We update our database which can produce tables and charts for you
