Move by Car
Why you should move by car
We recognise that some travel by car is sometimes necessary, and there are options available, such as car clubs, car sharing and smart driving, to ensure that when you do need to travel by car that you are not creating more carbon emissions and pollutants than you need to.
Vehicle emissions are the cause of 50 percent of air pollution and estimated to cause 24,000 deaths per year in the UK
It's estimated that one in three car journeys in the UK are less than one mile. This is a distance that can easily be walked and it won't cost you a thing.
Car club
A car club offers you the convenience of being able to use a clean, modern and reliable vehicle for those trips you cannot do by using public transport, cycling or walking. For more information about Hackney's car club take a look at the Car Club page.
Car sharing
Car sharing is a great way to reduce the environmental impact of travelling by car. Liftshare is a car sharing scheme that will put you in contact with someone who lives close to you who you could share a car with to and from work. From more information and to join liftshare take a look at Liftshare.
Electric Vehicles
Hackney Council is committed to helping people travel in a more sustainable manner and is working to reduce transport related emissions across the borough. As such we are looking at a number of ways of encouraging the transition to electric vehicles from petrol/diesel engined vehicles amongst our residents, businesses and the Council's own fleet of vehicles. For further information go to the Electric Vehicles page.
Smart driving
By practicising smart driving you will not only be reducing your environmental impact, you'll save money on petrol too. Smart driving invoves:
- Pumping your tyres to the right pressure
- Emptying the items you don't need out of your car
- Driving smoothly, without revving the engine and
- Sticking to the speed limit
