Move by Foot
Why you should move by foot
Local journeys are easy on foot and you get to know your local neighbourhood. Walking is good for you - just 30 minutes a day lowers your risk of heart disease and cancer and helps you maintain your weight.
The Council is always working to improve walking routes in the borough and you can enjoy all that Hackney has to offer on foot, including markets, parks and Regent's Canal.
Try walking part or all of the way to work, getting off the bus early and walking home, or walking your child to school.
8 per cent of car journeys are less than a mile and 25 per cent are less than 2 miles, making 33 per cent of all car journeys very walkable.
Short car journeys are the most damaging to the environment as your car's catalytic converter only begins working after the first 5 kilometres - the first kilometre you drive produces 60 per cent more fumes than any other.
Hackney's 2012 walking route
As part of the Olympic legacy, a new walking and cycling route has been developed that will guide people through Hackney to the Olympic Park. More
