Young people from Hackney - "the Hubzz team" - receive a Myplace cheque.

Myplace

About Hackney Council's Myplace programme

In 2010, Hackney Youth Service opened a brand new youth centre, Young Hackney Stoke Newington, funded through the government's myplace programme. There are plans to build or refurbish a further four youth centres.

What will the new centres offer?

All of the centres will provide a full programme of high-quality, structured youth activities, including:

  • basic and life skills
  • homework support
  • sport
  • music
  • media and creative arts.

Advice and guidance will also be available on:

  • education
  • training and employment
  • health and relationship matters.

The centres will be accessible, well resourced, safe and friendly places to go. They will involve young people, parents and voluntary and community organisations in their governance.

The aim is that they will be open seven days a week, including evenings.

Locations of the new centres

The new centres will be located at:

  • Dalston: Forest Road, E8 3BY
  • Shoreditch: Hoxton Hall, N1 6SH
  • Homerton: Concorde Centre, E9 5QG
  • North East: Woodberry Down (postcode to be confirmed)
  • Stoke Newington: Milton Gardens Estate, N16 8PU

Myplace centres and existing provision

Each of the neighbourhood centres, in addition to the core activities and full range of support services, will offer its own unique specialism, such as IT, media, sport, enterprise or drama. This will act as a draw for young people across perceived territorial boundaries.

The Myplace centres will not replace existing provision, but rather complement services provided both by the Youth Service and others.

Involvement of young people

Young people have been involved in the Myplace programme every step of the way, from the initial bid through to developing the plans for the centres.

A team of ten young people, the Hubbz team, has led on this process, planning and running consultation sessions (see top of page for a picture of them receiving a Myplace cheque).
