Nationality and Citizenship

This section of our website provides information about

Applying for British nationality

To apply for British nationality, you need to complete application forms which are available from the UK Border Agency website.

You can then use our Nationality Checking Service when submitting your application.

Nationality Checking Service

The Nationality Checking Service is open to both Hackney residents and non-residents. It means that:

  • we check that your application is completed accurately and supported with the correct documents.
  • we certify and copy your documents so that you can keep the originals.

Legal requirements

Naturalisation is not an entitlement. It is a matter of law as set out in the British Nationality Act 1981.

Please ensure before you apply for British nationality that you have read the application information on the UK Border Agency website. You must meet the legal requirements and fulfil the criteria for the basis of which you are applying to become a British citizen.
