Biggest drop in crime

Crime is dropping in Hackney faster than anywhere else in London, according to the latest figures.

Offences have been cut by more than 7,000, or 28 per cent, in the past three years – the best results for any borough in the capital.

Street robberies, home burglaries, and car thefts were all down in 2006/07, while overall crime fell by nearly 15 per cent.

The good news was revealed in the latest audited figures from the Metropolitan Police, released on 19 April. More information

Best service for Hackney

Service First Centre

These are the first glimpses of what a state-of-the-art new Council building in central Hackney is set to look like.

The Service First Centre will bring key public services for residents under one roof, and will be located behind Hackney Town Hall.

Hackney Planning Committee granted permission for the centre on 11 April. Its contemporary design has been chosen to complement the much-loved 1930s, grade II listed Town Hall building. Cllr Karen Alcock, Cabinet Member for Customer and Corporate Services said: “We are delighted to have the go-ahead for the new building. It is central to our ambition to provide modern welcoming surroundings where the people of Hackney can do business with us and to give our staff the professional flexible office space they deserve.” More information

New Cabinet Advisor for Environmental Sustainability appointed

Hackney's directly-elected Mayor, Jules Pipe, has appointed the borough's first ever Cabinet Advisor for Environmental Sustainability, Cllr Sophie Linden. Cllr Linden's role will involve co-ordinating the work being done across the Council and the borough to make Hackney as green a borough as possible.

Announcing the appointment, Mayor Jules Pipe said: "Although climate change is a global reality, action needs to start locally and I am pleased that by increasing the levels of rubbish we recycle, procuring the greenest waste fleet in the country and moving all Council buildings to green electricity we are making Hackney a greener place. The appointment of Cllr Linden shows that we are committed to improving our record in this area still further and I welcome her to my team".
