Mayor Jules Pipe marked the beginning of above ground construction of the Skinners’ Academy by burying a time-capsule. The Academy, due to open in September 2010 and a central part of the landmark Woodberry Down regeneration project, will provide over 1,100 non-denominational, mixed school places. The time capsule contained items chosen by pupils from the Skinners’ Company’s School for Girls Young Chamber Council and reflected the school’s ethos and culture and the pupil’s aspirations for the future. Mayor Jules Pipe welcomed one of the first new tube-style trains to Hackney Central station. The new trains, which can carry significantly more passengers in greater comfort, are part of wider improvements to the North London Line that will also see increased frequency of trains next year. This comes as a result of the Mayor’s longstanding campaign to improve transport links within the borough which will also see the East London Line Extension bring the first tube station to Hackney in 2010.
