Mayor Jules Pipe is proposing freezing Council tax for the fifth year in a row, as part of his budget plans for next year which have just been agreed by Cabinet. The proposals would make Hackney the only borough in the country not to increase its share of council tax for five consecutive years. The Mayor said: “In these difficult economic times, every penny counts, which is why we are doing our bit by continuing to keep council tax at 2005 levels.
Through making efficiency savings, we have managed to freeze the tax for a record fifth year, whilst investing more in the areas most important to our residents, such as cleaning streets more regularly; providing more activities for young people; and expanding essential services such as homecare to meet rising demand.” More information

Following a public consultation that showed strong support the Council has moved a step closer to reopening Murray Grove Post Office.
Mayor Pipe said: “Residents and businesses, supported by their local councillors, have told us that they would like to see Murray Grove Post Office reopened.”
“We’re now looking for a partner to run the Post Office. If this is successful, residents and businesses will need to support the Post Office by using it regularly to ensure the Council can keep it open for them in the long-term.” More information
