Olympic Park FAQs
How much of the 2012 Games Park will be in Hackney?
Hackney is at the heart of the 2012 Games. Located on the east of the borough, almost one third of the 2012 site is in Hackney. This offers real opportunities for the future – for sport and leisure and arts and culture in the legacy park; for work in the media centres after the Games; and for business and investment in the new neighbourhood at Hackney Wick.
What sports venues will be in Hackney for the Games, and which ones remain afterwards?
In 2012, Hackney will host the Handball Arena and the Hockey Arena. The Handball Arena will stay and be transformed into a multi sport community facility. The Hockey Arena is temporary and will be taken down after the 2012 Games.
The media centres for 2012 are in Hackney - they look like substantial buildings; what do they offer the borough after the Games?
The media centres (Main Press Centre / International Broadcast Centre) for 2012 will be in Hackney.
During the Games, 20,000 journalists will broadcast the Games to the world from these centres. After 2012, the aim is that these centres will remain in Hackney as part of new hub for work in media and creative industries.
The Council and partners are working to secure the future employment use of the media centres – which will boast state of the art technology in high quality employment space. There are potentially 8,000 new jobs in the media centres in cutting edge, ‘high tech’ industries.
The media centres will be an anchor for unprecedented development and investment; changing Hackney Wick and the wider area into a regional hub for new media, digital arts, design and IT.
The media centres will sit at the heart of a vibrant and attractive new neighbourhood, overlooking parkland and waterways, and providing affordable housing, a good mix of jobs and surrounding cafes, bars and shops, sports and entertainment facilities.
How can local people contribute ideas for the Olympic Park after the Games?
After the 2012 Games, the Olympic Park will become a place for people to enjoy for sport, leisure and entertainment.
There will be five permanent sports venues and green space equivalent to 100 football pitches in size.
Planning the legacy park is happening now.
Over 300 Hackney residents have already said what they would like in the Park.
