Hackney: A Host for 2012

Destination Hackney

Hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012 gives Hackney Council a unique opportunity to make Hackney a better place to live, work, visit and invest.

What we saidWhat we didWhat's next
We will promote Hackney as a destination for investment and a place where visitors can enjoy our celebrated theatres, galleries, restaurants, cafes, extensive parks and green spaces.Hackney’s green spaces have been awarded nine Green Flag awards, one Green Flag heritage award and one Green Pennant award. Four years ago our parks only had one award between them. The Multi Area Agreement will improve job prospects, housing options and the quality of the local environment and infrastructure. The regeneration framework will also plan action on health, education, crime, sport and culture.
We are working very closely with the other host boroughs on a range of areas to secure the best legacy benefits for all our residents.A Multi Area Agreement to tackle worklessness, improve housing and invest in the public realm across the five host boroughs has been drawn up. In the longer term, the Strategic Regeneration Framework aims to bring the quality of life in the five host boroughs up to at least the London average over the next 20 years.

We will liaise closely with artists in the 600 studios in the Wick to promote their work by building on the success of the ‘Hackney Wicked’ festival. This festival is an opportunity to visit and support local artists.

The Multi Area Agreement will improve job prospects, housing options and the quality of the local environment and infrastructure. The regeneration framework will also plan action on health, education, crime, sport and culture.

Hackney is changing and evolving. But, and more importantly, people’s perceptions of the borough reflect this genuine evolution.

Hackney is now seen as one of the key centres for art and culture in London, if not the country. Our borough’s lead role in the Cultural Olympiad reflects this keenly. I find this epicentre of the creative arts an inspiring and exciting place to work, and I constantly draw upon the energy of the wonderfully diverse people here for inspiration and ideas

Autograph ABP was  founded in 1988 to address the lack of representation of photographers from culturally diverse backgrounds.

Rivington Place is an award winning contemporary visual arts venue in Hackney dedicated to the presentation of culturally diverse visual arts and photography in the UK.   A new kind of hotel experience. The Hoxton Hotel was voted best UK hotel in the Guardian, Observer and guardian.co.uk travel awards 2009.
More and more people are aspiring to live in Hackney. Adelaide Wharf, which won a Hackney Design Award in 2008, is a fine example of jointly funded and jointly owned living space.   Hackney has the highest proportion of green space of any inner London borough. Clapton Pond is one of Hackney’s award winning open spaces.
