Hackney: A Host for 2012
Destination Hackney
Hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012 gives Hackney Council a unique opportunity to make Hackney a better place to live, work, visit and invest.
We are working with local partners to attract new investment into the borough and to boost business and enterprise opportunities.
We will promote the new neighbourhood at Hackney Wick and the high quality workspace we will gain through the legacy of the media centres. Combined with improved transport links, these will make the borough an attractive proposition to invest in.
Hackney Council will also use the Games to position Hackney as a first-class visitor destination. Hackney boasts the only outdoor heated Olympic-size swimming pool in the Capital at the London Fields Lido, and will benefit from many high quality sports facilities as part of the Games legacy.
Hackney is one of the Capital’s most vibrant cultural and artistic places. We will use the Games as an opportunity to promote attractions such as the Hackney Empire, Hackney Museum, White Cube art gallery, Geffrye Museum and Sutton House.
Visitors to Hackney can eat their way around the world with high quality, affordable cuisines including Vietnamese, Greek, Turkish, Chinese and Kosher. Hackney has a vibrant nightime economy in popular places including Dalston, Hoxton and Shoreditch.
Hackney Council is committed to improving the environment and preserving the nature, wildlife and waterways which are so important to our borough. We are working to secure the natural heritage of these areas in and around the Lea Valley.
We are working with the other host boroughs – Greenwich, Newham, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest – as well as the Olympic and Paralympic organisations to make sure we take full advantage of opportunities for local people, businesses and the economy.
What our supporters say
Lindsay Tripp, Head of Invest in Hackney
“The 2012 Games will positively change Hackney, building our reputation to attract new work and investment. The new neighbourhood and park at Hackney Wick will boost the area and attract investors and visitors alike.”
Jay Jopling, founder and Director of White Cube, Hoxton Square
“I’m delighted the creative community of the East End is taking its place alongside the sporting community to work together and benefit from the 2012 Games.”
What is Hackney Council doing?
- Investing in Hackney – using the 2012 Games as a catalyst for inward investment in the borough
- Promoting Hackney – using the Games as a way of promoting Hackney as a destination for living, working, visiting and investing
- Working together – five host boroughs acting together where this will achieve more than working separately
