Hackney: A Host for 2012
The journey travelled since 2007 - Introduction by Jules Pipe, Mayor of Hackney

In summer 2007 we published ‘Hackney: A Host for 2012’. It set out my agenda for what we as a council seek to gain for Hackney residents from hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012. Those priorities remain the same. They are: better public transport; jobs for local people; work for local businesses; new and improved sports facilities; a better environment; more participation in sport; culture and the arts; and promotion of our borough as a destination for work, living and investment. |
This publication is a snapshot of what we have achieved in the last two years as well as future ambitions. It gives an idea of the benefits from 2012 we are getting now. For a full update please visit www.hackney.gov.uk/olympics where you will find a report on our work.
There have also been major challenges. The recession led to the loss of private investment funding for the International Broadcast Centre and Main Press Centre which for a period of time threatened not only whether they would be permanent developments but if they would be located in Hackney Wick at all.
Months of hard work followed this and ensured the media centres would be built in Hackney, and that they will provide high quality employment space in legacy.
Sebastian Coe, Chair, London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games

“Hackney has done some great work to bring tangible benefits of 2012 to local people. Sport is at the centre of the Games but having the imagination and understanding to maximise possibilities across a range of activities is vital.” |
Tessa Jowell, Minister for the Cabinet Office, the Olympics and London and Paymaster General

I was delighted to present Hackney Council with its Beacon status award earlier this year, which recognised all it has done in using the opportunity of hosting the 2012 Games to get communities to become more active, in all senses of the word |
Boris Johnson, Mayor of London

"The summer of 2012 is going to be a hugely exciting time for Londoners and visitors alike. The eyes of the world will be on us and we are going to dazzle them with the greatest Games ever. This fantastic spectacle will also leave a lasting legacy particularly for people in Hackney who will benefit from the thousands of new jobs, new homes and new facilities that are planned in the coming years" |
