Hackney: A Host for 2012
Local Jobs and Business
The 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games will create thousands of jobs, including 10,000 construction jobs alone.
Hackney residents and local businesses need to be in line for these opportunities and the long-term benefits which will exist for years after the Games. Hackney Council is working in various ways to make sure this happens.
| What we said | What we did | What's next |
| We will make sure local people are properly skilled to take advantage of job opportunities and registered with OnSite Hackney Recruitment Centre to be in line for jobs. As Hackney is a host borough, residents are alerted to 2012-related jobs 48 hours before they are advertised more widely. | OnSite opened at new premises on Ghent Way. Over 400 people have been placed in jobs through OnSite, 80 with Olympic contractors. Around 1000 people have been given employment support. Using the opportunities arising from the Olympic and Paralympic Games, Hackney Council held several jobs fairs which have been attended by nearly 5,000 people looking for jobs, training, apprenticeships and volunteering positions. Ways into Work programme got more than 700 people into work in its first year by visiting them at home and discussing their options. | We will continue this approach with retail, hospitality and security industries. Also we are building a partnership with Cisco Systems in communications information technology for trainees in Hackney. The jobs fair ‘Your Olympics, Your Future, Your Choice’ is now a major annual event supported by over 15 organisations who are proactively looking to recruit and train residents searching for opportunities afforded them before, during and after the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Hackney has secured £5m to further develop the Ways into Work initiative. |
| We are working with local and national organisations to ensure local businesses can bid for new contracts and register online for upcoming contracts. | Over 1,000 local companies have registered with CompeteFor, a free online service that enables businesses to compete for work linked to the 2012 Games. | Hackney is supporting a consortia of businesses and building its capacity to ensure that it has a realistic chance of winning 2012 Games related work and contracts. |
| We are working with partners to help local people have the opportunity to learn media and IT skills, equipping them with the right skills to support broadcasters in 2012 and build future careers. | Following a pilot programme in the summer of 2008, Hackney media students will have the opportunity to showcase their work to major broadcasters at the prestigious Ravensbourne summer school. | Funding for media skills training is being sought. Contracts with leading IT and media businesses to discuss more vocational training in light of the opportunities presented by the media centres in Hackney Wick. |

OnSite case study – Junior Pennant
![]() |
Junior Pennant had been unemployed for six months prior to attending OnSite. OnSite helped him to get a Construction Skills Certification Scheme card and he attended a course to learn to drive a powered pick-up truck. One week later, a driving role came up on the Olympic Park and he was successful in securing the job. Junior is pleased that he was able to sign off and get his independence back. |
