Local jobs and business

Hackney: A Host for 2012

Local Jobs and Business

The 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games will create thousands of new jobs, and Hackney Council is working to ensure local people and businesses are well equipped to take advantage of these opportunities.

We already have initiatives in place to make sure residents gain the best possible skills and training, and local businesses are being offered help and advice on bidding for new contracts.

By helping to create long-term employment and enterprise opportunities, inspired by the Games, we can help to make Hackney a better place and raise people’s aspirations.

Up to 9,000 construction jobs will be created at peak on the Olympic site alone, and more workers will be needed on major projects including the extension of the East London Line and the development of a new neighbourhood at Stratford City.

Hackney Council is working with local partners including recruitment initiative On Site and Hackney Community College to make sure local people of all abilities have the best possible training, skills and access to job opportunities.

We are also working with local and national organisations to ensure local businesses can bid for new contracts, with arrangements including an online database where business details can be registered and matched to upcoming contracts.

The media centres for broadcast of the Games will be in Hackney. We will work with our partners to ensure local people have the opportunity to learn media and IT skills, equipping them to support broadcasters in 2012 and to build future careers.

Before, during and after the Games, we will promote Hackney as a destination for investment and a place where visitors can enjoy our borough’s celebrated theatres, galleries, restaurants, cafes and extensive parks and green spaces.

Hackney Council is working with training organisations to make sure local people can gain skills in hospitality and catering and benefit from a boosted visitor economy.

What our supporters say

Jamie Oliver, Chef and founder of Fifteen

“Working in Hackney, I can see that there’s a lot to be proud of in the borough but there’s also a lot more that can be done. I think the exciting opportunities for training and new jobs that the Games will bring to the area can only be a good thing.”

Gordon D'Silva, founder and Chief Executive of Hackney based Training for Life

“The Games offer many talented athletes the chance to achieve fame and glory. But equally important are the opportunities the Games bring for many more people to develop their skills and contribute towards the success of the Games. These new skills and experience will allow people the chance to improve their lives way beyond 2012.”

What is Hackney Council Doing?

  • Games business for local business – making sure local businesses benefit from the Games
