Rectory Road

Parking Services reviewed the uncontrolled area around Rectory Road rail station in 2008 with a view to introducing parking controls. The public consultation took place between March and May 2008 following many requests and petitions from local residents experiencing difficulty parking.

A technical assessment in late 2007 confirmed high levels of parking stress in this area but pinpointed the source as multi-vehicle ownership among local residents and not commuters to the nearby rail station and bus routes.

Consultation Outcome

Public Feedback

The public consultation generated a 27% response rate. All addresses within the consultation area received a leaflet and questionnaire, so everyone had an equal chance to provide feedback.

Overall, the majority of respondents (58%) were against the proposed introduction of parking controls, either as part of CPZ E or CPZ E Extension.

Respondents differed across the consultation area in their reported ease in finding available parking space close to home; residents living in streets closest to the existing CPZs perceived parking to be the most difficult, while those living further away experienced less problems.

Final Decisions

The Council has considered the current need for parking controls in the area based on public feedback from this consultation, commentary from local Councillors and parking stress surveys conducted in the area.

Parking controls will not be introduced in the area around Rectory Road rail station.

A number of safety issues were raised during the consultation, including adequate levels of ‘junction protection’; these double yellow lines around junction corners ensure that both motorists and pedestrians have a clear line of sight when approaching.

We will therefore be implementing safety restrictions in the area to increase road safety for all road users.
