About the project

The main aims of the project were to:

  • create a publicly accessible wetland habitat with visitor and educational facilities based around an operational reservoir owned by Thames Water
  • save and restore the significant listed buildings and give them a positive new use
  • enhance and develop the site for all ecology but especially a crucial habitat for overwintering rare birds
  • fully open the site to the public for the first time since the construction of the reservoirs in 1833

The site was formally opened to the public on Sunday 1st May 2016 - free, fully accessible and inclusive. Key outcomes include:

  • the Grade 2 listed coal house has been sensitively restored and provides cafe, toilet, interpretation and orientation facilities, as well as a rooftop space for viewing of both reservoirs. It has been confirmed that it will be removed from the Heritage at Risk Register; Grade II Ivy House Sluice made visually accessible
  • 17 hectares of enhanced habitats include reed beds, hedgerows, grassland, wildflower meadow and orchard. Developing ecology with over 50 breeding bird species, bats, invertebrates and amphibians
  • over 100 local volunteers already and ongoing links with schools and local groups; direct impact of local artisans and suppliers
  • successful opening of a Thames Water operational reservoir to shared use
  • extensive constraints requiring innovative technical solutions
  • huge improvement to the visual amenity of the area and its interface with the wider regeneration of the area
