Why improving physical activity participation matters
Physical inactivity is an established risk factor which contributes to many health problems:
- More than two million deaths each year are thought to be attributable to physical inactivity.
- Inactivity is said to be responsible for over a third of deaths from coronary heart disease (CHD) in the UK (37%). In fact, inactive people have almost double the risk of dying of CHD compared to active people.
- Physical inactivity (along with unhealthy diets) has contributed to rapid increases in obesity with 22% of men and 23% of women in England now obese.
In addition,
- The NHS Spend 3,000 every minute on combating illness which could be prevented by physical activity.
- 54% of patients have said they have never been prescribed physical activity by their GP.
