Broadway Market Conservation Area

Conservation areas are areas of special historic interest which contribute to Hackney’s unique identity.

Broadway Market Conservation Area was first designated in 1995. It lies along an historic path, known as the Market Porter’s Route, a traditional route for the transportation of farming produce from the fields in Hackney to markets in the City. It contains many fine buildings from the nineteenth century, both on Broadway Market itself and in the surrounding streets.

A draft Conservation Area Appraisal has been prepared: it describes the special characteristics of the area and offers guidance on what form of development would be appropriate in the future. Minor changes to the boundary of the Conservation Area are also proposed.

A copy of the appraisal can be downloaded by clicking on the icon on the right hand side. A copy is available for inspection at the Planning Department's reception at Dorothy Hodgkin House.
