Cycle Training

I would like my child to receive cycle training, what do I do?

All of the London Borough of Hackney’s child cycle training is carried out in the boroughs Primary Schools and the majority of the child training is to level 2 of the National Standard for Cycle Training. Level 2 National Standard training for children, is primarily carried out on the road, in real traffic situations under safe supervision. If your child is in year 5 or 6, and their school is in the borough, we may already have a course planned in their school. If there is no course planned at present the school, or a school representative should contact the Hackney Service Centre to arrange a course.

If the child is in a year lower than 5 and cycle training is required, Level 1 National Standards training may be given. Level 1 training is carried out in a controlled environment away from roads and vehicles and teaches basic cycle control skills such as, starting and stopping, manoeuvring, signalling and using the gears. Again this is offered through schools.

If the child is at secondary school, adult training can be offered (please see the section below about adult cycle training).

If the child is at a school outside the London Borough of Hackney please contact  the borough in which they go to school.

For further information regarding child cycle training please call the Hackney Service Centre on 0208 356 2897.

I wish to receive some cycle training? (Adult enquiry)
What times do the (adult) schemes run / general information about schemes.

You must live or work in London Borough of Hackney to be eligible to receive adult cycle training. If you do not live or work in the London Borough of Hackney, you should contact your local borough Cycling Officer.

Training is normally provided on a 1 to 1 basis, and the date/time and venue are agreed with the trainer on arranging the course which lasts 2 hours and is generally carried out on local roads. A nominal fee of £5 may apply, depending on your circumstances.

For further information regarding adult cycle training please call the Hackney Service Centre on 0208 356 2897.

I live in Hackney but my children are at a school in a different borough, what do I do about cycle training?

You will need to speak to either the school your child attends or the borough where the school is located. The cycle training provided in other boroughs may be different to how the London Borough of Hackney operates.

I wish to request further information on Cycle Training.
