Frequently Asked Questions

Speed Limits and Humps

Can we have a 20mph speed limit installed?

All roads subject to a 20mph sped limit usually have speed humps or traffic calming installed in them. This is because current UK legislation requires that the 20mph limit be physically self enforcing without relying on the Police to enforce them. If you would like to request that a 20mph speed limit be introduced into your road or area, please write to us.

Please contact us in writing with the information listed:

  • Why you require a 20mph speed limit,
  • Which roads you think should be included in the area,
  • What the outcome you are expecting is,

The noise and vibration coming from traffic going over the speed hump is making my windows vibrate and is damaging my property.

Usually noise and vibration from speed humps is caused by cars trying to drive over the humps too quickly. This type of nuisance is difficult to prevent. Residents are made aware of this potential disadvantage in addition to the well known benefits of humps before they are built so that residents can make an informed decision on whether to have them.

The vibration caused from road humps is usually airborne vibration which can make windows vibrate but will not cause any damage to a property. In general if road humps are constructed to the correct tolerances and drivers drive over them at appropriate speed they will not cause any damage to properties or nuisance in the vicinity.

I do not want the speed hump outside my house.

The positioning of road humps is an important factor in the overall design of a traffic calming or 20mph scheme. This influences the spacing between humps so that consistently low speeds can be achieved and can also be located at crossing points to assist pedestrians and vulnerable road users. We therefore cannot significantly change the position of speed humps without adversely affecting the overall design of a scheme. All road hump schemes will involve a public consultation and invite comments from residents before they proceed. Alterations to any proposal will be considered where this does not compromise the overall purpose of the scheme.

The speed hump has damaged my vehicle?

It’s very rare that speed humps cause damage to vehicles as they have been specifically designed to allow vehicles to drive over them at an appropriate speed without difficulty. The current road hump specifications have been extensively researched and tested by the Department for Transport before the current legislation was approved.

With an issue like this we would always check if the humps are built to the correct specification as sometimes humps may lose their tolerances if a carriageway becomes deformed after significant wear and tear from traffic.

I would like some speed humps installed on my road.

Speed humps can be installed on both 20mph and 30mph roads. The main difference is in the way the humps are designed so that they limit average vehicle speeds to the speed limit that applies in the road.
