Council Tax Bands
The District Valuer of the Valuation Office Agency is responsible for assessing property values for Council Tax purposes. Each domestic property must be allocated an appropriate valuation band according to its market value as at 1 April 1991.
There are eight valuation bands and your property will be in one of these bands. Your Council Tax band will determine how much Council Tax you will have to pay each year. The valuation bands for 2008/09 are:
| Band | Property Value | Total |
| Band A | £40,000 or less | £872.18 |
| Band B | £40,001 - £52,000 | £1,017.54 |
| Band C | £52,001 - £68,000 | £1,162.91 |
| Band D | £68,001 - £88,000 | £1,308.27 |
| Band E | £88,001 - £120,000 | £1,599.00 |
| Band F | £120,001 - £160,000 | £1,889.73 |
| Band G | £160,001 - £320,000 | £2,180.45 |
| Band H | More than £320,000 | £2,616.54 |
If you have any queries about your valuation band, the Council Tax office cannot deal with it.

Banding Appeals
Since December 1993 you can only appeal against your band in a few circumstances. For example:
- If the value of your property has changed, for example if you have demolished, converted or extended part of it, or if there has been a physical change in the area affecting property values
- Rises and falls in property values due to the state of the housing market is not a reason to gain a reduction or a rise in the property band
You can also appeal within six months of:
- Moving into your home or becoming liable for the Council Tax
- Changes made to the band of your property by the Listing Officer, or a change to the band of a similar property made by a Court decision
You should not appeal to us
Instead you should contact the Listing Officer of the Valuation Office Agency of the Inland Revenue, Cityside, 40 Adler Street, London E1 1JY.
Telephone: 020 7530 7200 Fax: 020 7441 7099.
Please note that you must pay the Council Tax based on the present valuation band of your property until the Listing Officer changes the list. We cannot waive payment until your appeal is settled. But we can refund any overpayment afterwards if your appeal succeeds.
