Hackney: A Host for 2012
Better Public Transport
Better public transport has long been a top priority for Hackney, and Mayor Jules Pipe has led the campaign to ensure the 2012 Games give the borough the opportunity to secure this.
We have achieved Hackney’s first tube connection via the extension of the East London Line, and Hackney will have new stations at Dalston, Haggerston, Hoxton and Shoreditch by 2010. The link will extend to Highbury and Islington by 2011.
Hackney Council has also secured major improvements to the North London Line, with around £200m being invested in bigger trains and more frequent services by 2010. New trains will be more accessible with dedicated wheelchair bays.
This will form part of the new London Overground which will create an orbital route around the Capital and beyond – linking the lines from Barking in the east, to West Croydon in the south, Richmond in the west and Watford Junction in the north.
Hackney Council will use these improved transport links to actively promote easier travel within the borough and to attract visitors and businesses, encouraging investment and enterprise.
We are also working with our partner Olympic and Paralympic organisations to ensure that we secure the best possible pedestrian and cycle routes as part of the Games legacy, so that communities are well connected to the new parks and sports facilities.
Hackney residents are among those living closest to where the Games will be staged in 2012. Over the coming years, we will be working with residents and our partners on local roads to manage construction traffic and to keep disruption down to a minimum.
