Recycling on estates and high rise properties

Hackney Council has been trialling different methods of collecting recycling from estates and high rise buildings. The results from these trials have been analysed, and a new recycling service is being rolled out to all estates across the borough.

Where space is permitted, estates will have two large bins for mixed recycling collecting:

  • Tins and cans
  • Plastic bottles
  • Cardboard
  • Mixed glass bottles and jars

There will also be another bin collecting paper only. Paper will be separated out to keep the quality of the material high, so it can be reprocessed into high quality paper products.

On estates where space is limited, one recycling bin will be placed for mixed materials, colleting:

  • Paper
  • Tins and cans
  • Plastic bottles
  • Cardboard
  • Mixed glass  bottles and jars

These materials can all be put in together.

For those estates which contain street level properties within the grounds, a Green Box door to door collection will be implemented, subject to an assessment carried out by the Council’s recycling contractors. For more information on this service please see the Green Box recycling page.

To find out which service your estate has in place, please phone the recycling hotline.
