How to Get Involved

Scrutiny Commissions actively welcome PDF Document involvement of the public (63.5KB) and seek the views of members of the public on topics that are under review. To find out what reviews are currently being undertaken by each Commission, please see the Current Reviews page. If you would like to contribute to a review please fill in the Microsoft Word Document Getting Involved form (27.5KB).

Suggestions

Scrutiny Commissions also welcome suggestions for topics of inquiries and will consider issues put forward by any members of the public, interest groups or businesses. If you know of an issue you think would warrant review, please refer to the points below to ensure that it is a suitable subject for Overview and Scrutiny, and then fill in the Microsoft Word Document Topic Suggestion form (27KB).

Suggestions for reviews must:

  • Affect a group of people living within the Borough
  • Relate to a service, event or issue in which the Council has a significant stake or over which the Council has an influence or interest
  • Not be an issue which overview and scrutiny has considered during the last 12 months
  • Not relate to an individual service complaint
  • Not relate to matters dealt with by another Council committee, unless the issue deals with procedure

Please note

It should be noted, however, that Overview and Scrutiny is not a complaints system - there is a separate Corporate Complaints System for use by members of the public.

Scrutiny Work Programme

An Annual Scrutiny Work Programme discussion is held in Spring each year, attended by the Mayor and Cabinet Members, Overview and Scrutiny Chairs, and relevant Officers. This determines the Scrutiny review programme for the coming municipal year. We particularly welcome topic suggestions during December and January to feed into this process.

Co-opted Members

Commissions can choose to appoint Co-opted Members, either on a permanent basis or for the duration of a review to which they may bring specific expertise. Co-optees are generally non-voting, but the Children and Young People’s Commission includes statutory Co-optees with voting rights. For further information on Co-optees, please view the PDF Document Co-optee Report (178KB)
