Local Democracy Week
Let’s Talk Politics

Did you know that your opinion counts, and that you have the right to express your views freely in all matters that affect you? Did you know you have the power to influence the way your area and your country are run? This is democracy.

But what is democracy? How does democracy work? Let’s start at the beginning. Hackney Council is a local authority that takes care of local issues like keeping our streets clean and safe, running facilities for young people and looking after the area’s social housing.

It has a directly elected Mayor who makes the decisions about how to run the Council; a first citizen – known as the Speaker of Hackney; and 57 councillors. Hackney has been split into 19 areas called wards, and each ward has three councillors who are elected by residents in that ward, and can raise any issues you may have with the Council.

Feel free to contact your local councillors. They’ll be happy to listen to you! Call 020 8356 3000 for more.

And remember – your opinion counts too
