Workplace Travel Plan

What is a Workplace Travel Plan?

Providing sustainable travel options for employees and customers makes good business sense. It can save time, improve the environment and when you add the associated costs like staff expenses, car park charges and fleet management costs, it offers financial savings too.

Transport for London’s Workplace Travel Planning Team and Hackney Council are here to help improve your organisation's efficiency and productivity by giving your staff wider travel options. These include:

  • Car sharing and car clubs
  • Public transport
  • Cycling and walking
  • Reducing the need to travel through home and flexible working

We can help you set up a 'workplace travel plan' - a business management tool that develops and promotes sustainable travel options for your staff saving your organisation and employees time and money.

We can also identify sources of funding and provide advice, information and support, tailored to your strategic business needs.

TfL has create two different packages designed to suit businesses of different sizes. For further information, choose the one that's right for you:

What support is available?

To enable both large organisations and small-medium sized enterprises to implement travel plans, Transport for London’s Workplace Travel Planning Team and Hackney Council will provide tailored guidance and support to your business.

This includes various funding opportunities and resources designed to help with the travel planning process.

  • Corporate – support scheme worth at least £20,000 for larger organisations with more than 250 staff at one site.
  • Enterprise – support scheme with up to £5,000 match funding for small and medium sized organisations with between 20 and 250 staff at one site.
  • Take a stand – providing free cycle parking for organisations developing a workplace travel plan.

Corporate

The Corporate support package is worth at least £20,000 and as part of the package we will:

  • Help you kick-start the process by providing your organisation with up to 15 days site-specific advice.
  • Undertake audits of staff, site and local infrastructure on your behalf and collate and analyse the information gathered.
  • Guide you to the end result: a workplace travel plan which is tailored to your site and your organisational needs.

Created especially for London’s large employers, Corporate will help your organisation improve its efficiency and productivity in one of the most competitive world cities.

We will help your staff choose wider travel options, as well as looking to develop other transport or access opportunities for your business. We will also help you set up a workplace travel plan – a business management tool tailored to your organisation’s strategic objectives and that will save you time and money. In addition, you will help create a shift towards walking, cycling, public transport and car sharing, as well as smarter ways of working.

We can assist you further by:

  • Funding a 'quick win' initiative based on one area within your travel plan where you can make maximum impact in minimum time to really benefit your organisation.
  • Helping you effectively promote the travel plan within your organisation and to maintain momentum.

For small-medium sized organisations that employ less than 250 staff, Transport for London can provide match funding of up to £5,000 for you to implement a measure identified within your travel plan, as well as advice on how to make the most of your investment in sustainable transport.

Created especially for London's small and medium sized businesses with between 20 and 250 employees, Enterprise will help improve your organisation's efficiency and productivity by giving your staff wider travel options.

Through Enterprise, a local travel plan coordinator will provide expert support and advice together with a targeted 'quick win' package of measures and merchandise.

Enterprise will provide guidance through each stage of development and implementation of a workplace travel plan and work with you using a range of site-specific surveys and audit tools to gather data on your organisation’s current travel patterns and needs. We will even help you develop a business case for the plan, and present it to senior management/board for approval.

Once your travel plan is agreed upon, our specially developed incentive packages will promote a particular element of your workplace travel plan, such as car sharing, smarter working or cycling. Those elements that have the greatest potential for your organisation will be targeted first.
