The Mayor's priorities

The Mayor has set clear priorities for the Council for the next four years:

Improving services and increasing opportunities for all, raising the life chances of the most disadvantaged. Service priorities are:

  • a safer, cleaner, greener Hackney: Your street cleaning will take place on a published, guaranteed day; when you alert the Council about dumped rubbish or flyposting, we will tackle it within 24 hours.  Police and Council enforcement teams will join up as part of Team Hackney to deliver a 20% reduction in street crime and tackle anti-social behaviour fairly and effectively across Hackney.
  • children and young people: 1,800 more secondary school places will be provided in Hackney, and 680 more childcare places; £200 million will be invested in Hackney’s schools and Children’s Centres.
  • affordable, decent homes: 10,000 Council homes will get new windows, roofs or kitchens and bathrooms where needed.  2,000 new affordable homes will be built for Hackney residents.

Making sure the Council is high performing and efficient by ensuring:

  • Service First: every resident will have direct access, either face to face, on the phone or via the web, to the person they need to resolve their problem first time.
  • We continue to drive up council tax and rent collection, ensuring help is given to those who can’t pay but coming down hard on those who could pay but choose not to.

Providing effective community leadership and involving the whole borough in what we do.
