Orange Sack - Recycling Trial in Cazenove Ward
Since 6 September 2011, we have been trialling a new way of collecting recycling from properties in Cazenove Ward. The new service aims to make recycling even easier for you by providing large orange sacks in which you can place all of your recyclable materials.
Below you'll find information about collection times, how the trial works, and the materials you can recycle using your orange sack. If you need to order a new orange sack, you can do so using our online recycling container form.
Collection times
- Your recycling collections will take place every Tuesday.
- Please put your sacks out by 7.30am on your collection day
- Please note that your rubbish will now be collected on the same day as your recycling.
How the trial works
During the trial you will be given orange sacks to place your recyclable materials in. Please follow the below instructions when placing your recycling out for collection:
1. Place all of your recyclable materials in an orange sack - please see below for a list of recylable materials or read our orange sack leaflet (PDF, 1MB)
2. When the sack is full, firmly tie the top.
3. Place your sack out for collection by 7.30am on Tuesday. You should place it at the front of your property where it can be easily seen from the pavement. Please do not leave bags on the pavement unless this is unavoidable.
More information about the trial is also available on our orange sack FAQs page and 'Recycling in Hackney - the facts' document (PDF, 626KB).

Your questions answered
Please see below for answers to frequently asked questions about the trial. If you have any other queries about the trial, feel free to contact us using the details at the top-right corner of this page.
Why is the trial taking place?
It is hoped that the trial will help more people recycle as much as possible and help Hackney reach challenging recycling targets and help save money which can be reinvested into services. Furthermore, by making rubbish and recycling collections on the same day, we hope our waste services will be easier to use.
How do I order more recycling sacks?
If you run out of orange sacks before the end of the trial, you can request more by calling the Recycling Hotline on 020 8356 6688.
What happens to the recycling in the sacks?
Your sacks will be taken to a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in Bow. The materials will be carefully sorted before being sent to recycling companies to be turned into new products. You can watch a video of how your materials are sorted here.
What should I do with my green box during the trial?
Please use the orange sacks provided during the trial period. Keep hold of your green box to use again when the trial ends.
Will the food and garden waste recycling services change as well?
No, your food and garden waste collections will continue as normal. You can recycle your food waste in a Blue Bin (collected weekly), and your garden waste in a Brown Bin (collected fortnightly). To find out more about these services, visit our blue bin or brown bin web pages.
How can I recycle my textiles and shoes?
Textiles (such as clothes) and shoes can be recycled at one of over 50 textile recycling banks across the borough, or can be taken to a charity shop. To find out where your nearest ones are, please see our recycling bank locations
How can I recycle my household batteries?
Hackney Residents can now recycle household batteries by dropping them into dedicated bins found at local libraries and supermarkets.
You can find bins at the following libraries:
- Stamford Hill Library, Portland Avenue, N16 6SB
- Stoke Newington Library, Stoke Newington Church Street, N16 0JS
- CLR James Library, 24-30 Dalston Lane, E8 3AZ

How can I recycle my motor oil and car batteries?
Many garages now recycle motor oil and batteries when they change them. Alternatively they can be taken to:
- Household Reuse and Recycling Centre 40-42 Hornsey Street, Islington, N7 8HQ
- South Access Road Household Waste and Recycling Centre, South Access Road, Waltham Forest, E17 8BS
When will trial results be available?
Data and information from the trial is regularly reviewed. To find out how it has been going so far you can view the trial results to date here (PDF, 210KB).
My recycling sacks are being thrown into the back of a rubbish truck - why's that happening?
Don't worry! During the trial we will be using similar-looking trucks to collect your recycling and rubbish. In the morning the recycling truck will first come and pick up your recycling, before taking it to a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in Bow where it will be sorted automatically. Following that, a second truck will pass along your street and collect all your rubbish.
I live on an estate. Will my recycling service be changing too?
Yes. We are in the process of changing all the communal recycling bins in Cazenove Ward to fully mixed recycling bins. This will mean that you will be able to put all the materials you recycle at the moment in one bin, without the need to separate out your paper beforehand.
I live in a flat above a shop and don't have a recycling service. Will I get any orange sacks as part of the trial?
A separate trial recycling service for flats above shops will be launched in five areas of the borough this autumn. If the service is both viable and affordable, we hope to roll it out more widely in 2012.
