Recycling Scheme Expanded
From Monday 5 October you can recycle even more materials in Hackney. Food and drink cartons (Tetra Pak) and plastic packaging have been added to both estates and street level collections.
The scheme was expanded in response to residents’ requests, and Hackney joins only a handful of councils nationwide to collect these materials.

In addition to these materials you can already recycle paper, cardboard, glass bottles and jars, food and drink tins and cans, aerosols and plastic bottles wherever you live in the borough.
Cllr Alan Laing, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said:
'Hackney now has one of the best recycling services in terms of the range of materials that can be collected. This has been developed progressively and in response to residents expectations and developments in technology. It is important now that everyone uses the service to its full potential to help towards a cleaner and greener future'
More information for residents on the recycling services available and how to reduce household waste will be provided shortly. In the meantime please see the following information or call the recycling hotline for further information.
Why has it taken a while for Hackney to collect these materials?
The Council wants to make sure that the materials you place out for collection are recycled within or as close to the UK as possible. Developments in collection, sorting and reprocessing technology and infrastructure mean this is now possible for cartons and plastic packaging and we have made the necessary arrangement to include these in collection.
How should I recycle these new materials?
Simply collect these with all your other materials for recycling and place them in your collection container. Please ensure that all cartons are squashed to save space and plastic packaging is free from any food.
What type of plastic packaging can I recycle?
Most household plastic packaging can now be recycled. This includes:
Yes please
- Plastic bottles
- Food trays
- Yoghurt pots
- Ice cream tubs
- Margarine containers
- Fruit punnets
There are however some items that cannot and should not be put in collections:
No thank you
- Polystyrene and foam
- Plastic films
- Crisp packets and sweet wrappers
- Plant pots
- Plastic garden furniture
- Tupperware containers
What difference will recycling these items make?
If you recycle everything you can now recycle from home you will notice that your rubbish bin is much lighter and takes up less room. You will be doing something positive for yourself and your community, helping to reduce pollution and save resources while also helping the Council to run more effectively by saving the money it would cost to send these materials to landfill. This can then be invested in to key services that benefit our residents.
