Household battery recycling bins
![]() |
Eight colourful battery recycling bins have been placed in libraries across the borough enable all residents to conveniently deposit their household batteries for recycling. Every year an estimated 660 million batteries that are disposed of in the UK. This is the equivalent weight 110 jumbo jet aeroplanes. At present only 2% of household batteries in of these are recycled. New laws mean that 25% of all household batteries must be recycled by 2012 rising to 45% by 2016. |
The law will force the producers of batteries to establish battery recycling schemes as opposed to local authorities. Hackney Council is supporting this drive to increase recycling and has led on establishing the first collection points for batteries within the borough. Collections will be undertaken by Battery Back www.batteryback.org. Once collected the battery components will be recovered and used for a number of applications including making more batteries and in the steel manufacturing process.
The new bins can only accept household batteries. Any vehicle or automotive batteries should be either exchanged with the retailer when purchasing a new battery or taken to a Household Waste Recycling Centre in the neighbouring borough of Islington.
