What is it?
Ridley Road Market is at the heart of Dalston town centre, and is one of the most popular Hackney markets. It is the only market in the Borough that trades every weekday as well as Saturdays.
Ridley Road Market is well known in the wider London area and attracts a large number of visitors. The market offers a wide range of commodities such as foods from Asia, Africa, the Caribbean and Mediterranean, clothing and household goods.
The market at the moment faces significant challenges, such as a run down street environment with damaged street furniture and market stall electrical units. For these reasons Hackney Council has allocated £1million to improve the area. Our aim is to make the market more inviting for existing visitors and to attract more people to the area.
We have been working with landscape architects to develop a new market pitch layout, in consultation with the traders and the shops. This will aim to further improve the visitor experience and day-to-day working of the market.

The consultation for this scheme involved two phases:
Consultation phase one: key stakeholders
During the first stage of consultation, the Council approached people who were going to be directly affected by the improvements that are taking place.
The Council consulted with the scheme’s key stakeholders in the summer of 2009 - market traders, businesses, shops and local residents. Questionnaires were provided so that these stakeholders were given the opportunity to express their views and inform us of their priorities for improving the market.
The feedback we received informed the design process, and what the key stakeholders' priorities for improvements were identified.
Consultation phase 2: wider stakeholders
A public consultation event was held on Thursday 10 September 2009 from 10am to 4:30 on a stall on Ridley Road Market and from 3:30pm to 8:30pm at Centerprise Trust, 136 Kingsland High Street, E8 2NS.
A further consultation event was held on Saturday 10 October 2009 on a stall on Ridley Road Market between 10am and 5pm. The final date for feedback and comments was the 16 October 2009 and consultation has now closed, although the consultation material can still be viewed on the links below.
Next steps
The next steps will be development of a final design proposal and market pitch layout.
