Residential care for adults

A residential care home provides accommodation, meals and personal care for older people, people with disabilities, or people who are unable to manage at home, for whatever reason.

The level of care varies from home to home, but the Government defines it as the kind of care you would receive from a competent and caring relative. This includes: help with eating, washing, bathing, dressing and toilet needs; and caring for you if you become ill. However, residential care does not include nursing care.

The decision to recommend a residential or nursing home will only be made after a needs assessment. If nursing home care is recommended, then the local health authority also has to agree to this. You can also consider homes in other local authority areas if your needs will be better met there.

When choosing a home, it is important to make sure that you choose one that will be right for you both now and in the future. You can get advice and information to help you make this important decision from -

  • your social worker or care manager
  • a district nurse
  • a health visitor
  • your family doctor

Hackney Community Services may arrange residential or nursing home care for elderly people and people with disabilities who are unable to manage at home. We can provide this service directly through Median Road Resource Centre and also provide supported living accommodation through our Supported Living schemes

Registration and regulation care homes

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) is the government body responsible for the registration and regulation of some adult social care services such as residential care.

The role of CQC changed in June 2010 and they no longer conduct regular inspections of care homes. The previous CQC quality rating scheme, a star rating from zero to three, has also been discontinued. As at December 2010 CQC continue to develop a new scheme to monitor the quality of care homes. This new CQC approach is more outcome focused and inspections are now risk-based rather than the routine and process-driven system of the past. A directory of all registered care homes inside and outside the borough can be found on the re-designed Care Directory on the CQC website.

You can also find copies of the historical inpsection reports for each home at the old CQC website although it is uncertain how long the resource for historical data will be available. We will continue to update this webpage with appropriate links as soon as more details are released on the new approach from CQC.
