How to get involved
Scrutiny Commissions actively welcome involvement of the public and seek the views of members of the public on topics that are under review.
Submit evidence to a review
Scrutiny reviews rely on contributions from residents and local organisations as much as the evidence we receive from council services. We will happily receive your views in the format that is most convenient to you - be it by email, through the electronic forms at the end of each review webpage, by phone, or by visiting.
If you are involved in an organisation or service that you think relates to a current review, you can suggest that the Commission visit and see how you operate. Most scrutiny reviews involve site visits- the recent review of Services for Disabled Children met parents and disabled children at an "Activity for All" day at the Britannia Leisure Centre; attended the Hackney Families Together Forum at the Ann Tayler Children's Centre; planned and ran meetings with both the secondary and primary disabled children's forums; ran discussion panels with local Voluntary & Community Organisations delivering short breaks for disabled children (including the Huddlestone Centre, the Laburnam Boat Club, Resources for Autism, and Bikur Cholim D'Satmer Trust); visited the Hackney Ark to view services in action and speak to families using those services to gauge their views, as well as hearing from a variety of representative groups of communities within the borough. Please get in touch if you would like councillors to visit your service.
Suggest future topics
Each year the Overview and Scrutiny function completes a survey about what issues are important to local residents. This helps to guide decision-making about what to include on our work programme and we would encourage you to get involved.
However, we are happy to take suggestions throughout the year, which we will ensure are raised when the discussion are held about the next round of reviews (usually in May). Please feel free to contact us on the details provided on the right, with some background information about why this topic should be considered.
Attend a meeting
If you are broadly interested in the work of the Commissions, please feel free to attend one of the 10 meetings they hold each year. These usually take place at 7pm in Hackney Town Hall, but occasionally we will hold them in locations which relate to the topics on discussion (the recent review of Resident Participation had one of its major meetings in the Becker estate). Members of the public are often able to ask questions during these meetings, but this is at the discretion of the chair and depends on the agenda.
