How Does Scrutiny Function in Hackney?
Hackney’s Scrutiny function consists of an Overview and Scrutiny Board, which takes a strategic view of issues within the Borough, reviewing performance and correlating the work of the all the Commission. There are five Scrutiny Commissions which report to the Board, as can be seen in the table below:
| Commission | Scope |
| Regeneration and Social Inclusion Scrutiny Commission |
|
| Governance and Resources Scrutiny Commission |
|
| Living in Hackney Scrutiny Commission |
|
| Health in Hackney Scrutiny Commission |
|
| Children and Young People Scrutiny Commission |

Scrutiny Commissions are made up of Councillors who are not members of the Cabinet. Their role is to review performance and examine the decisions of the Executive from a non party-political perspective, and to conduct in–depth investigations into key issues for Hackney. They also provide advice and guidance to inform Executive decisions.
The Commissions meet regularly, between eight and 11 times a year. The Board meets once a month, but can schedule additional meetings to respond to a Call-in.
