Assembly Hall
In the past, the Assembly Hall provided a highly successful social dance hall for local residents, and was also hired out for many other private and public events. The three-bayed entrance facing Church Street highlights the civic importance of its function.
It fell into disrepair and was eventually closed in 1999 for health and safety reasons. However, it is currently being restored to its original 1930s design, with modern facilities and full accessibility, to serve the community well into the future.
The main hall has been returned to its original splendour, with the signature mirror ball reinstated. The sprung Canadian maple dance floor is now one of the best examples in England.
Local residents provided feedback through the public consultation about how they would like to use the Hall.
Their views have been used to inform the design brief, and the work that was carried out now provides a flexible space, ideal for
- community activities
- cultural activities such as dancing, arts, performances, cinema viewings and music
- large wedding and civil partnership receptions
- bar mitzvahs and other ceremonies
